wheeler has been working all morning in the super doppler 10 weather center. jen lewis is monitoring the road conditions right now if folks have to head out. and rico bush has been traveling across the region all morning. we'll get a live update from him in a moment. but let's start with jeremy with the latest on the forecast. jeremy. ("jeremy ad libs wx headlines") winter weather advisories are up for all our virginia cities and counties until the mid afternoon. today: snow showers becoming a mix of rain, sleet, and snow. then it will turn to all rain through the midday and early afternoon. highs will be in the mid 40s. winds var. 5-10mph. tonight: mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers. temps will hold steady or rise from the mid 40s. winds sw 5-15mph. tuesday: scattered to occasional rain showers. highs will be near 60. winds south/west 10- 20mph. warm/moist air is running overtop of the colder air at the surface this

and twitter. how are things looking now? tips for driving in the snow from aaa: accelerate and decelerate slowly. applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. take time to slow down for a stoplight. drive slowly. everything takes longer on snow- covered roads. accelerating, stopping, turning - nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly. the normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. this increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. know the pedal-it's normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the abs is activated. in cars without abs, use "threshold" breaking, keeping your heel on the floorboard and using th ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. don't stop if you can avoid it. if you can slow down enough to keep

new this morning, more than 140 firefighters in new york city battled this house fire overnight. take a look at these flames from an amateur videographer at the scene. it started around 11:00 last night in brooklyn. firefighters tweeted around 1:30, they finally had the fire under control. no one was hurt. investigators haven't not figured out how the fire started. hundreds of thousands of people in mexico came to see pope francis. during sunday services, the pontiff condemned the drug trade and violence that comes with it. for the children who were too sick to see pope francis, he made a housecall.

"here i bless you, the doctors bless you, every time someone takes care of you, everyone, the nurses, the staff, everyone who works here blesses you children. the pope will visit the u-s mexico border later this week to bring attention to the issue of immigration. police near richmond are calling a man a hero after he jumped into a flaming car to save a complete stranger. meredith conyers pulled the driver from the vehicle just before it exploded. take a look at this picture of the fire. henrico county police say the driver ran off the road and slammed into a sign post. conyers says he was driving by and heard the man screaming for help. :23 - 40 runs 17 conyers says: "so i pulled him through the driver's side window and got him out that way and then pulled him maybe ten feet from the car and by that time, the car was engulfed in flames and he was just moaning and

is to file as early as you can before any would-be thief does. we start with an update on breaking overnight news out of virginia beach. take a look at this brand new video of a two-alarm apartment fire on treetop drive. this is in the linkhorn bay area off birdneck road. the fire started around 3:00 this morning. crews got the flames out about an hour-and-a-half later. paramedics took one person to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation. crews say the fire affected 6 of the 12 units in the apartment. we talked to a resident who says he helped people get out of the building. fire, my place is on fire. so immediately made sure we got all our nieghbors out. the woman next to me her boyfriend is on deployment and their two kids were inside so i

new place to a fire that spanned four buildings destroyed homes and affected 30 families this holiday weekend. 60 firefighters in norfolk fought freezing conditions to battle the flames in ocean view. investigators say it could be weeks or months before they determine how it started. only chopper 10 was above the charred remains, still smoking early sunday morning. the red cross helped more than two dozen families find another place to live and new clothes to wear. 10 on your side spoke to a man who ran towards the fire, as crews went door to door. nathaniel raider says he saw the smoke billowing out of a condo. he ran to the building and told people to leave. then he went next door to another structure as the fire spread to another
